Day 3 - Comasagua

The unusually chilly day was filled with futbol (soccer). The group teamed up with a wonderful man named Melvin and his organization, the International Sports Coalition (ISC), to organize a sports outreach in Comasauga. The team did a wonderful job of ministering to the people and simply enjoying time spent with them. Everyone has discovered very creative ways of overcoming the language barrier (the typical conversation vaguely resembles a game of charades, but much more enthusiastic... and much louder) and we have learned that sports break the social, economic and cultural barriers that are traditionally encountered. The mayor was so grateful for the program that he bought all of us a delicious lunch of chicken, rice, salad and tortillas from a close by tienda (little store). Jeff and his food became very popular with the stray dogs.

Craig, Rick and Jordan were so patient as they ran into obstacle after obstacle today. Despite having carefully planned out the schedule for the number of teams that were expected, they learned to embrace the fluidity necessary to maintain sanity in El Salvador. Everyone that played on the TLA/ISC teams gave it everything they had, regardless of the fact that we don't stand a chance in a soccer game against anyone in this country. Poor Devon sacrificed herself to block a shot and ended up doing what looked like a very uncomfortable split... but got right back up and kept playing! What a warrior!

As the games lasted all morning and afternoon, many members of the group had their first experience with having to pay to use the public restroom. A woman sits at the door, you hand her 15 cents, she gives you a wad of toilet paper and lets you in. One of many new adventures.

All in all, everyone is doing very well. No one has gotten sick
and everyone seems to be sleeping well. We thank you so very much for keeping us in your prayers, they are clearly having an impact! Hope all is well back home!
