Day 2 - Puerto del Diablo

Today was such a different kind of day in El Salvador than yesterday! The team was able to replenish their spirits. The day began with the first breakfast at Mister Donut (think Dunkin Donuts meets breakfast buffet) and then we headed to the Church of Faith and Worship for the Sunday service with bags full of chocolate to hand out to the kids. Pastor Mario delivered a beautiful message that hit home for many. After the service, we invited some of the children to join us in hiking up the mountain later that day.

The team headed back to the apartments to change, and then we left for Puerto del Diablo. (You’ll have to ask team members to share the story of this mountain, it is chilling.) The hike was both beautiful and challenging. We happen to be in El Salvador during the rainy season, and it poured earlier that morning, leaving the rocks and trail very wet and slippery.(Chad, your mom climbed the ladder! While it was soaking wet and a waterfall was going down the side of the rock!!) It took a lot of teamwork to get everyone to the top safely, but boy was it worth it. In past trips, the view from the top of the mountain has typically been somewhat cloudy and foggy, but today’s view was unbelievably clear.

After everyone had time to soak in the surrounding view, we gathered at the peak of the mountain as the pastor shared his experience ministering in the prison and his vision for how our work will have an impact. The message lit a fire in the team and everyone is looking forward to the prison ministry and what God has in store. We are learning that God plans much bigger than we can dream.

Once we descended the mountain, it was time for an El Salvador staple: dinner at a pupusaria! Pupusas are most closely described as filled corn tortillas, filled with things such as meat, beans and cheese. Everyone enjoyed dinner and then it was back to the apartments for a quick debrief of the day before getting to bed… we have an early morning tomorrow!
